Publication Date: May 2013
Pages: 291
Genre: Humour, Science Fiction
Rating (/5): ⭐️  ⭐️  ⭐️  ⭐️

About the author:

Matt Haig is a British author who was born on 3rd July 1975 in Sheffield. Matt Haig has written a number of books ranging from novels to non-fiction. Haig is very open with the fact he went through a time where he struggled with Panic Disorder. Which was actually revealed to me in the acknowledgements in the book The Humans.

The Blurb:

"THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME.
OR IS THERE?

After an 'incident' one wet Friday night where Professor Andrew Martin is found walking naked through the streets of Cambridge, he is not feeling quite himself. Food sickens him. Clothes confound him. Even his loving wife and teenage son are repulsive to him. He feels lost amongst a crazy alien species and hates everyone on the planet. Everyone, that is, except Newton, and he's a dog.

What could possibly make someone change their mind about the human race. . . ?"

The Plot:

Without giving to much away, an alien from a very far off galaxy was sent down by the hosts, as Professor Andrew Martin has discovered how to solve the Reimann hypothesis. The alien takes on Prof. Andrew Martin's body and life and has to destroy everything to do with and everyone that knows about Andrew Martin's latest find.

Review:

The narrative of this book is first person, through the aliens thoughts. You are in the mind of the alien, your mind takes on the aliens thoughts to an extent. Which was hilarious. Going through the steps with the alien as it is trying to fit in with a past man's life. The big reason I loved this book so much was due to the fact that it made you question simple things in life and realise how silly things can be. I found myself laughing more than a few times throughout.

Also, the fact it made you question mankind and wonder why we do some things the way we do, but then it comes full circle and makes you realise how wonderful we can be. How compassionate and caring the human race is.

Matt Haig dealt with the relationships within the story so well through his writing. It really shows the comparison of the real Professor Andrew Martin's feelings towards and relationships with the people, compared to how the alien deals with these relationships. It shows you how important the relationships in your life are.

Honestly one of my favourite books to ever read. It was such a easy, comedic read. I highly recommend to everyone and anyone. I think no matter what genre of book you like, you will love this. I believe in different ways it deals with all the genres in one way or another. I cannot wait to read more of Matt Haig's books. I really didn't expect to love it as much as I did.

Thank you for reading,
Rebecca Elaine

  6. I've heard countless good things about this book but I haven't read it yet - truth be told, the only reason I haven't is because the author tweeted something which didn't sit right with a lot of people (including me) a little while ago and it's kinda put me off him. Although I am aware he does a lot for the mental health community, so that's good.

  7. That book cover looks beautiful. Sci-fi books aren't really my thing, so I don't think I'd enjoy it, but I'm so glad you did!
